Annual Visit

Yesterday I had my annual visit. In case my readership is not made up entirely of women, I won't go into details.

The point is that as I was driving to my Dr's office, I realized I was excited to see her. Her being, Dr. Schwartz. The attachment I have with Dr. Schwartz is strong. And entirely on my side. She delivered my babies! Of course I love her!

I think something happens between the mother and the obstetrician at the time of birth. The Dr. sees the woman monthly, at least, and then weekly as delivery approaches. There is a camaraderie, a sense that this person really gets you. Understands the pains of pregnancy, listens with care to concerns, encourages you to keep up the good fight! I know it sounds a little hoakie, but I developed a this sort of feeling with Dr. Schwartz, so the annual visit is not just to make sure that I'm a healthy woman, but also to review the wonderful relationship we have because of the birth of my babies. Their birth-days were the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Well, I wouldn't say we were friends since I only see her once a year. But she's a constant in my life, and there are some friends that I don't even see that often.

Ditto to Dr Schwartz!!! I remember when it was your goal to make her laugh with your first pregnancy. She's just so serious sometimes...

What, my friend, does this picture have to do with your relationship with your OB???

Well, it's the picture of Rick and Captain Renault from "Casablanca" where Rick watches Ilsa leave on the airplane with her new husband, Victor Laszlo, and Rick says to the Captain, "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Symbolically, the plane is the birth of Reagan and Mati and I'm Rick and Dr. Schwartz is Captain Renault.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I haven't visited my doc since my 6-week post-partum visit after Ethan was born. I guess I better get on that pretty soon...I've never missed a check-up for my kids, but I'm a slacker for getting myself to the doctor!

I totally get this relationship. I have said for years I have a non-sexual crush on my OB, who is (gasp) a MAN! But seriously, when you are discussing extremely personal things with someone while wearing a paper towel, it's a whole lot easier if that person doesn't feel like a stranger.

And Jess, we are ONE! I understood the meaning of that picture right away. Actually laughed out loud.
